Joseph Muir was born in Nanaimo in 1875. He married Agnes Patterson of Cedar in 1901. Muir was a founding member of the Native Sons Post No. 3 and in his later years was custodian of the Bastion museum run by the Native Sons. Muir was also a member of the Knights of Phythias, Ancient Order of Forester's Court Nanaimo No. 5886, and Ashlar Lodge No. 3 (Freemasons). Agnes Muir was a member of the Silver Leaf Temple No. 2. (the women's branch of the Knights of Phythias). Joseph Muir died in 1963.

Materials were donated to the Nanaimo District Museum in an undocumented transaction and transferred to the Nanaimo Community Archives in 1993.

Fonds consists of family papers including certificates, receipts, correspondence and clippings.
