James Gordon Bodeker was born on August 3, 1919 in Spirit River, Alberta. His parents were Peter George Bendix and Lutie (nee Brady) Bodeker. The senior Bodekers worked as cooks at the Nanaimo Vocational School. In the 1950s (and possibly later), Bodeker worked at Harmac Pulp Mill in Nanaimo. He married Marjorie Gertrude Suek. In 1987, Bodeker died in Dawson Creek, aged 66.
