The Harewood Fire Protection District Commission was incorporated in 1947, and its name changed to the Harewood Improvement District some time in the 1950s. It was organized under the Water Act by the people of Harewood District to provide fire protection, street lighting, water distribution, garbage disposal, and sewage service, and to administer parks and playgrounds. The first trustees included: Chairman Richard Nicol; Secretary Alex Virostko; Trustees, James Borserio, Alex Speller and Campbell Dow. A. Rod Glen was a later member. The Improvement District was dissolved when Harewood amalgamated with the City of Nanaimo in 1975.
Some records were transferred from the City of Nanaimo in 2002. Suzie Cawthorne donated additional records in 2006. In 2013, Barb Harling, daughter of long-time trustee Alex Virostko, donated more records.
Fonds consists of records created by the Commission and is arranged in the following series: 1) Minutes; 2) Bylaws; 3) Financial Records; 4) Land Records and 5) Miscellaneous.
