In 1910, Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd. was incorporated to take over the Dunsmuir coal mining operations near Nanaimo and Cumberland on Vancouver Island. The purchase agreement included coal rights to the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Company's land grant of 1,900,000 acres. W.L. Coulson was appointed the first General Manager of Operations. In 1928, the company purchased the Western Fuel Corporation, successor to the original Hudson's Bay Company mining operations. The whole of Western Fuel's common shares were purchased by Canadian Collieries and while its operations were directed by its parent company, Western Fuel operations were carried on under its own name until the closure of its mines by exhaustion of the coal measures. The company changed its name in 1957 to Canadian Collieries Resources Ltd to better reflect its increasingly diverse operations in timber and oil. In 1964, the company became a subsidiary of Weldwood of Canada Ltd. which was itself a subsidiary of the United States Plywood Corporation. In 2007, Georgia Pacific purchased all the common and preferred stock of United States Plywood Corporation.

The expense statements and Union Bay records were donated to the Nanaimo District Museum in undocumented transactions. The microfiche was donated to the Archives in an undocumented transaction. Employment bulletins and booklet were donated to the Archives in 1999 by Bob MacDougall. Other records were donated to the Nanaimo Community Archives in 1992 by R.S. Isaacson. His father, S.V. Isaacson, was Vice-President of Finance of Canadian Collieries Resources Ltd. In 2023, Rodney Beaumont donated the land and mineral registers.
