The Bates were a prominent Nanaimo family. Mark Bate, who arrived in Nanaimo in 1857, had ten children by his first wife, Sarah Ann Cartwright.
The records were in the custody of Darren Marshall, great-great grandson of Mark Bate, who retrieved them from his mother's basement and subsequently donated them to the Nanaimo Community Archives in 1997.
