James Albert Hitchen, known by Albert, was a Nanaimo miner who lived in the Southend. Albert married Edith Una Taylor in Nanaimo in 1932. He died in 1972 in Nanaimo at the age of 74; Edith Una died in 1988 at the age of 81.

Materials were donated to the Nanaimo Museum by Rosemary Ritchie in 1988 (Museum Accession No.: 988.159L & M) and transferred to the Nanaimo Community Archives in 1993.

Collection consists of Albert Hitchen's pay statements for work in the Northfield Mine (Canadian Collieries (Dunsmuir) Ltd.). Statements show gross wages less deductions for such items as coal, doctor, hospital fund, income tax, national defence tax and union dues.
