Margaret (Peggy) Alexandria Grant Williams was born on April 17, 1915. Born into two pioneer Nanaimo families, she lived her entire life in the mid-island area. She resided at the family farm in Nanoose Bay until she left to attend Victoria College and the University of British Columbia. After graduation in 1936, Williams took a teaching position at Parksville Elementary School where she met and married J. Leonard Nicholls in 1938. The Nicholls were active in many community organizations in Districts 68 and 69, including the Nanaimo Historical Society. They were also enthusiastic travelers and visited many different countries. In later years, Nicholls' interest in local history led to the research and publication of "From the Black Country", a compilation of genealogical stories about early Nanaimo families. Nicholls died in 2009.
Most of the material was in the custodianship of Daphne Paterson.
Collection consists of material collected by Nicolls for her multi-volume series on the Princess Royal Settlers of 1854. Each file may contain any combination of notes, clippings, photographs, and other material. The files are arranged alphabetically by surname. There is also a small collection of information about other families and miscellaneous other publications.
