Organized in 1919, the Nanaimo Council of Women were a voice through which delegates from over thirty women's organizations in the Nanaimo area could effect change and solve social problems by lobbying the government. The Nanaimo Council was the local body of the Provincial, Federal, and International Councils of Women, thereby providing the Councils with broad and far-reaching objectives and goals. Despite fluctuating membership levels, the local council was successful in coordinating a fight against drug addiction, establishing a community services directory, lobbying for more adequate housing on the First Nations Reserve, and supporting the new library and police station. The local council was awarded the Victorian Order of Nurses for Nanaimo in recognition of all their achievements, and continued to impact the Nanaimo area until 1984.
The Nanaimo Council of Women donated records (Accn 1992 029 A) to the Nanaimo District Museum in 1981. These records were subsequently donated to the Archives in 1992. A second group of records (Accn 1996 007 A) was donated to the Nanaimo Community Archives after they were found in the basement of the Credit Union, who provided meeting rooms and storage space for many community groups. In 1965, the Nanaimo Council of Women agreed to pay the Credit Union $5.00 per year for records storage. Additional records were donated to the Archives in 1998.
