        Thomas Robert McLay was born in Scotland in 1873 and emigrated to Victoria and Nanaimo with his family. He worked as a typographer, then became a tugboat owner and sea captain. He married Anne Iberg of Nanaimo in 1916 and they had one son, Douglas. The family emigrated to California in 1928.
        Fonds consists of family papers, including marriage and birth certificates and photographs; records of Thomas McLay relating to his tugboat business, including a 1920 log book and account book, and letters of reference and qualifications.
        Title based on the contents of the fonds.
        The records were donated to the Archives shortly after his death by Douglas McLay's heir.
