        John Sabiston was a ship pilot on the waters surrounding Vancouver Island and the northern British Columbia coastline from 1867-1896. He was known as a skillful and careful navigator. He worked for a time at a Hudson's Bay Company sawmill; was elected as an alderman of the City of Nanaimo; and was a warden of St. Paul's Anglican Church. He died April 17, 1902.

        Fonds consists of two pilot's licences (1877, 1880) and a leather pouch for same, a letter to Mrs. Sabiston from the Nanaimo Pilotage Authority offering condolences on her husband's death, 1902; and a copy of the Nanaimo Pilotage Bylaws, 1883.
