In 1946, the Soroptimist Club of Nanaimo received its charter from the Soroptimist International Association. The Club's purpose was to bring together women from different walks of life to foster  community betterment and to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace. Though a member of a larger body, the Nanaimo Soroptimists had independence in their decision-making and control over local projects. The Club's executive included: president, treasurer, corresponding secretary and recording secretary. Committees included: Finance, Constitution and Bylaws, Advancement of Women, International Goodwill and Understanding, United Nations, International Extension and Publicity. Lena Martin, Dorothy McPhillips, Roma Conroy, Emily Kneen were among the long-standing members. Among their many projects, the Soroptimists' were involved in the development of senior citizens' housing. The club also supported youth, and contributed to United Nations' funds.  The Soroptimists were well known for their Christmas puddings, the sale of which was a significant fundraiser for the club.  The Club disbanded in 1973.
After the Nanaimo Soroptimists surrendered their charter, most of the records were given to Lena Martin for safekeeping. Materials were subsequently given to the Nanaimo Community Archives on behalf of Mrs. Martin by her niece in December 2001.  The 1953 installation programme (1994 012 A) was donated by the Alberni Historical Association.
