Global Village fonds [textual record]. – 1976-1995.

In 1976, the Nanaimo International Development Education Association (NIDEA) was incorporated under the Societies Act. NIDEA's mission was to make educational programming and materials available locally about socio-economic development in Canada and abroad and particularly in developing nations and to encourage “individual commitment to simplification of life-styles, and to increase the awareness of the interdependence of life systems." The NIDEA lobbied the federal government about economic and social issues, and attended international, national and local conferences. In 1977, the NIDEA began publication of a monthly newsletter and co-sponsored with Malaspina College a conference on international development. In 1979, David Weston became the first full-time coordinator of the NIDEA and the organization began to sponsor lecture and film series on issues such as energy, human rights, and women in the Third World. In 1983, the NIDEA changed its name to Global Village (Nanaimo) International Development Education Association. Global Village sponsored seminars in Nanaimo and partnered with Malaspina University College and School District 68 to deliver programs, educational materials, and conferences. In 1995, funding cuts forced the organization to shift from the delivery of workshops and conferences to retail sales of goods produced under fair trade, non-exploitative practices. Global Village continues to operate a retail outlet during the Christmas season (2007).
Fonds consists of constitutions and by-laws, minutes, agendas, reports, clippings files, Global Village newsletters and administrative files related to various programs organized or presented by the organization. The fonds is arranged in 6 series 1) Constitution and bylaws; 2) Director's records; 3) Project files; 4) Sponsorship records 5) Newsletters and 6) Miscellaneous.

A records management system existed but was not consistently applied; wherever possible, the original order of the records has been maintained.

Series consists of records related to Global Village's community programs and events. Programs included courses in media analysis and television production and a program of international films relevant to the third world and socio-political issues. In addition, this series includes records related to the Dube Symposium and other conferences and workshops organized by the Global Village.

Series consists of proposals, applications, contracts, correspondence, memos and reports relevant to contractual arrangements between the Global Village and various sponsors including Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), School District 68, the City of Nanaimo and Malaspina University-College. The Global Village had an in-kind agreement with School District 68. In exchange for educational support material and programming, Global Village received office support such as photocopying, courier service and equipment loans.
